Is it August already? Really? Where did the summer go? Didn’t it just start? Don’t worry if you find yourself asking these questions, you’re not alone. Summer slipped past all of us. But there’s also plenty of time for one last grand adventure before the kids head back to school.

One of the best parts of living in San Diego is that there’s always something going on. There’s no dearth of events or activities, and it’s prime time to take advantage of that fact. Whether you’re after an adventure, a weekend getaway, or an entertaining afternoon, you have options.

Here are some of our favorite happenings around the area. There are, of course, so many more to choose from. If you can’t find something to do with the family in San Diego during the summer, you’re not looking hard enough.

Hit The Beach

You may have noticed this already, but San Diego has fantastic beaches. Surfing, sailing, and just hanging around on the sand are all wonderful ways to spend a summer afternoon. You can take the kids on a kayak tour of the La Jolla sea caves, take a whale watching cruise, or go on a snorkeling excursion. Whatever your pleasure, there’s an activity to suit you. Exploring the outdoors is a great, healthy way to show the kids a new appreciation for their city before they go back to school.

Cheer On The Padres

There’s a reason baseball players are called the boys of summer. Baseball is a national pastime, and what better time to enjoy a Padres game than in the pristine August afternoon? And they do have a couple of home stands coming up. Sure, the Swinging Friars aren’t likely to make the postseason, but baseball games are fun family bonding experiences before going back to school. And if nothing else, it gets you and the kids out in the sunshine and fresh air.

Outdoor Concerts

One of the biggest cities on the west coast, San Diego has a vibrant music scene. And with the gorgeous summer weather, it’s a perfect place for outdoor concerts. The offerings range from national touring acts to chamber quartets and everything in between. You can find classic rock tribute bands playing for free in El Cajon or a New Orleans style brass band in Balboa Park. Whatever your tastes, or the tastes of your kids, there’s something for you to find.

San Diego Zoo

Home to more than 3500 animals and dozens of exhibits, the San Diego Zoo is always a great attraction. But the summer months have something special in mind. Through September 4, the facility is open late for Nighttime Zoo. As day turns into night, you and the kids can celebrate with various musical acts, activities, and shows. It’s definitely something to check out before they head back to school.

Legoland

Legoland is one of our all-time favorite local attractions. There’s always something to do, and summer is no exception. There are rides for kids of all ages, the Sea Life aquarium, and even a new 4D adventure featuring the characters from The Lego Movie. And, of course, there are also more little plastic building blocks than you can possibly count.

These are, of course, just a few potential activities for you and your kids before they head back to school. There’s also camping, road trips, outdoor movies, neighborhood festivals all over the city, and so much more. Part of what makes San Diego great is that there’s never a shortage of things to do. You’ll definitely be able to find a memorable adventure before the kids head back to school.
